Cyclists who travel extensively know one thing for certain: Renting a bike is usually a poor experience. So much so, that most cyclists are willing to pay large sums of money to pack and ship their own bikes across the country, and often the world.

Bike rentals either cater to the general public and only offer entry level bikes or they're a bike shop that rents bikes as a secondary revenue source. Either way the experience is typically never something to write home about, nor does the experience typically warrant the high costs. Plus, let's be honest, the bike you rent is usually beat up, the wrong size or makes weird noises when you pedal.

Considerations

Shipping a bike is a lot of work.

A serious cyclist needs a guaranteed method for renting a premium quality bike during their travels. A bike that fits, not just by size, but also riding style. Hitting the mountain trails in Southern California? Riding the rolling roads in the Driftless region of Wisconsin? In Indianapolis on business during the Major Taylor CX weekend? While in the concept phase, the following considerations were made:

Inventory Source: There are three ways to approach inventory. First option: Velo Supply's inventory is sourced from certified cyclists across the country, who sign up and list their bikes for rental, similar to AirBNB. Second option: Velo Supply's inventory is owned and serviced locally in each market. Third Option: Velo Supply offers both community-sourced inventory, as well as, a premium fleet of Velo Supply bikes that are owned and serviced locally by regional VS teams.
Partnerships or Collaborations: A major consideration is the opportunity for brand and/or manufacturer partnerships. For reference, Velo Supply could partner with Trek Bikes, source Trek inventory, and exclusively offer their bikes for rental. There are obvious benefits to this model for both Velo Supply and the bike supplier, including special pricing and bulk discounts, the ability to brand the premium fleets, and partnerships with local bike shops for certified maintenance and delivery services.
Legal & Insurance: Bikes are meant to be ridden, and in reality, ridden the way you ride. Whether that's downhill, on gravel or grass, or at high speeds, it shouldn't matter. That's why Velo Supply would require the extensive use of ride waivers which would cover damages, as well as, lost and stolen bikes and parts. Additionally, Velo Supply would offer optional rental insurance coverage with additional coverage for rider peace of mind.

Find your fit.

One of the biggest issues with the current bike rental industry is the lack of ability to customize your fit. Fit is incredibly important when it comes to comfort. Avid cyclists already have their fit dialed–as it's absolutely necessary to be comfortable on long rides. Avid cyclists have often achieved their ideal fit over years of riding, or they have been measured by a bike fitter. Velo Supply allows users to provide fit measurements to receive fit recommendations and/or manually select the fit options, including frame size, stem length, saddle width, and pedal type.

Here is the operational customization process:

Bike is booked: All relevant information is passed to Velo Supply, including order details, location for delivery, and fit selections.
Bike fit is adjusted prior to delivery: A certified bike technician adjusts the fit according to the measurements (if provided) and the fit selections.
Final fit adjustments are made at hand-off: This includes seat height adjustment, handlebar rotation, tire pressure, and any modifications to specificied bike fit, ie. saddle width adjustment.

The primary focus of this is to provide an unforgettable, elevated ride experience. This level of customization is just not available within standard bike rentals, but is necessary when catering to avid cyclists. If the rider is not comfortable that's what they will remember.
